We have three custom-built whelping boxes to ensure the safety, security and sanitation required for the birth and after care of the whelps. These spacious boxes measure 8 by 5 feet. There are large pigging rails around the entire interior to create a "safe zone" for the little whelps, when big mama lies down. The sides are covered by a nonporous surface, and the floor is painted cement. This makes daily disinfecting and cleaning a breeze!
To keep the whelping box warm enough for newborn pups, we have an extra large, canine heating pad, and an overhead, electromagnetic, medical heating apparatus. The whelping box is kept between 85 to 90 degrees the first two weeks, and then maintained between 78 to 85 degrees for the remaining weeks. Clean newspapers and towels are changed at least twice daily, and there are always lots of toys for playtime!
